If you’ve been scrolling #careertok or checking LinkedIn lately, you’ve probably heard about the September Surge—a spike in job postings and hiring that usually runs from early September through Halloween.
Lauren McGoodwin, founder of Career Contessa, explains that companies are hiring now for several reasons: summer is over, teams are back in the office, budgets need to be used before year-end, and seasonal industries are preparing for the holidays. Even companies without seasonal upticks are filling roles now so new hires are ready to hit the ground running in January.
Simply put: this is one of the best times to land a new job.
How to Make the Most of the September Surge
Here’s how to prepare and increase your chances of getting hired:
1. Update your resume and cover letter
Create a base template that you can tweak for each application. Highlight your achievements and tailor your language to match the role.
2. Refresh your digital presence
Make sure LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms reflect your professional brand. Your online presence should showcase your skills, personality, and achievements.
3. Network strategically
Networking isn’t just in-person events anymore. Send LinkedIn connection requests, DM someone you admire, schedule virtual coffees, or ask mentors for referrals. Be authentic and proactive.
4. Make a target list
Identify companies you’re interested in and check their careers pages. Reach out to contacts, recruiters, or connections who can provide insights or referrals for open or upcoming roles.
5. Follow up persistently
Hiring teams are busy during the surge. If you don’t hear back, send a polite follow-up—and don’t be afraid to follow up again. Showing interest and initiative can set you apart.
